The supraspinatus is one of the four rotator cuff muscles, originating from the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and inserting on the greater tubercle of the humerus, primarily responsible for initiating shoulder abduction. Clinically, it is crucial because its tendon is commonly involved in rotator cuff tears, leading to shoulder pain and impaired arm movement. A key complication is supraspinatus tendinopathy or tear, which can cause weakness and limit overhead activities.
