The Thompson test is a clinical examination used to assess the integrity of the Achilles tendon by squeezing the calf muscle and observing for plantarflexion of the foot. It is crucial in diagnosing Achilles tendon rupture, a condition that requires prompt management to restore function and prevent long-term disability. A positive Thompson test, indicated by absent foot movement, strongly suggests a complete tendon rupture.
