Meconium is the sterile, greenish-black substance forming the first intestinal discharge of a newborn, composed of swallowed amniotic fluid, bile, and cellular debris. Clinically, its presence in amniotic fluid signals fetal distress and risk of aspiration. Meconium aspiration syndrome is a serious complication causing neonatal respiratory distress.
