Cardiomyopathies are a group of diseases characterised by structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium not explained by coronary artery disease or abnormal loading conditions. They are clinically important as they often cause heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a common inherited form, is a key cause of sudden death in young athletes.
