Gloassary term:

Aortic regurgitation

Aortic regurgitation is the backflow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle during diastole due to incomplete closure of the aortic valve. It leads to volume overload, left ventricular dilation, and eventually heart failure if untreated. Clinically, it is important to recognise as chronic cases may remain asymptomatic until significant ventricular dysfunction develops.
