The extracellular matrix is a complex network of proteins and polysaccharides secreted by cells that provides structural support and biochemical signals to surrounding tissues. It is crucial for tissue integrity, repair, and cell communication, influencing processes such as wound healing and tumour progression. Abnormalities in the extracellular matrix can lead to fibrosis, impairing organ function and complicating diseases like liver cirrhosis.
