The mesenteric artery refers to either the superior or inferior artery supplying blood to the intestines and portions of the colon. It is crucial in clinical practice because occlusion or narrowing can lead to intestinal ischemia, a potentially life-threatening condition. A key complication associated with the superior mesenteric artery is acute mesenteric ischemia, often caused by embolism or thrombosis.
