Myocardial dysfunction refers to impaired contractile performance of the heart muscle, reducing its ability to pump blood effectively. It is clinically significant as it underlies heart failure and contributes to morbidity and mortality. A common cause is ischaemic injury, where reduced coronary blood flow leads to weakened myocardial contraction and potential progression to cardiogenic shock.
