Goitre is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland visible as a swelling in the anterior neck. It matters clinically because it can indicate underlying thyroid dysfunction, iodine deficiency, or autoimmune disease, affecting hormone production and metabolic regulation. A common association is iodine deficiency, which can lead to hypothyroidism and, if untreated, developmental delays or compressive symptoms.
