Gloassary term:

retrosternal

Retrosternal describes a location situated directly behind the sternum (breastbone) within the thoracic cavity. This term is clinically important for accurately localising symptoms, signs, or pathology such as pain or masses, guiding diagnosis and management. For example, retrosternal chest pain is a classic presentation of angina or myocardial infarction, signalling potential cardiac ischaemia.
