GI bleeding refers to any form of bleeding that occurs within the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. It is clinically significant as it can indicate serious underlying conditions such as peptic ulcers or malignancies, and can lead to significant morbidity due to blood loss and shock. A common complication of GI bleeding is anaemia, which may require transfusion or further intervention.
