Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland’s parafollicular cells that lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclast activity and promoting calcium excretion by the kidneys. It is clinically important in managing hypercalcaemia and monitoring medullary thyroid carcinoma. Its deficiency or dysregulation can contribute to disorders of calcium metabolism.
