Chief cells are specialised gastric gland cells located in the stomach’s fundus and body that secrete pepsinogen, the inactive precursor of pepsin, essential for protein digestion. Their function is critical in maintaining effective gastric digestion and mucosal integrity. Dysfunction or hyperplasia of chief cells can contribute to peptic ulcer disease or gastric neoplasia.
