Hypoxemia is a condition characterised by abnormally low partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood, impairing oxygen delivery to tissues. It is clinically significant because it can lead to cellular hypoxia, organ dysfunction, and is a critical parameter in respiratory and cardiovascular assessment. A common cause is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which can result in respiratory failure if untreated.
