Pleural effusion

Pleural effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural space between the lung and chest wall, impairing normal lung expansion and gas exchange. Clinically, it presents with dyspnoea and chest pain, requiring prompt diagnosis to guide management. It is commonly associated with heart failure but can also indicate infection or malignancy, risking respiratory compromise if untreated.
