Preterm refers to a birth occurring before 37 completed weeks of gestation, indicating incomplete fetal development. Clinically, preterm birth is significant due to increased risks of respiratory distress, neurodevelopmental impairment, and mortality. A key complication is neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, stemming from immature lung surfactant production.
