Diabetic ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes characterised by hyperglycaemia, metabolic acidosis, and ketonaemia due to insulin deficiency and increased counter-regulatory hormones. It requires urgent treatment to prevent cerebral oedema and death. Commonly triggered by infection, it highlights the need for prompt diagnosis and metabolic correction.
