Statins are a class of lipid-lowering medications that inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme critical for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. They are essential in clinical practice for reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. A key consideration is their potential to cause muscle-related side effects, including myopathy and, rarely, rhabdomyolysis.
