Interstitial lung disease (ILD) refers to a group of disorders characterised by inflammation and fibrosis of the lung interstitium, impairing gas exchange and lung compliance. It is clinically important due to progressive respiratory failure and reduced quality of life. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a key example, often leading to severe hypoxaemia and respiratory failure.
