Avascular necrosis is the death of bone tissue due to interrupted blood supply, leading to bone collapse and joint dysfunction. It is clinically important because early diagnosis can prevent progressive joint damage and disability. A common cause is corticosteroid use, which can precipitate this condition by impairing blood flow to the femoral head.
