Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like sterol molecule essential for cell membrane structure, hormone synthesis, and bile acid production. Clinically, its regulation is crucial because elevated cholesterol levels contribute to atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. For example, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is a major modifiable risk factor for coronary artery disease.
