A gene mutation is a permanent alteration in the DNA sequence of a gene that can affect its function or regulation. This matters clinically because mutations can underlie inherited disorders, influence disease susceptibility, or impact response to treatment. For example, mutations in the BRCA1 gene significantly increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
