Hyperthyroidism is a condition characterised by excessive production of thyroid hormones, leading to an increased metabolic rate and systemic effects. It matters clinically because it can cause symptoms such as weight loss, palpitations, and heat intolerance, and requires timely diagnosis to prevent complications. A key association is Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
