Pericardial effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial sac surrounding the heart. It is clinically significant because it can impair cardiac function by restricting heart movement, potentially leading to cardiac tamponade, a life-threatening condition. A common cause is pericarditis, which can result from infection, autoimmune disease, or malignancy.
