Sclerosis is the abnormal hardening and thickening of tissue due to excessive fibrous connective tissue deposition, often resulting from chronic inflammation or injury. It impairs normal tissue function by reducing elasticity and disrupting structure, which is clinically significant in diseases like multiple sclerosis, where nerve conduction is compromised, leading to neurological deficits.
