Hypercholesterolaemia is a condition characterised by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the blood, primarily low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It is clinically important because elevated cholesterol contributes to the development of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease. A key complication of untreated hypercholesterolaemia is myocardial infarction due to plaque formation and arterial narrowing.
