Malaise is a nonspecific sensation of general discomfort, weakness, or unease often signalling the onset of an illness. It matters clinically as an early subjective symptom that can prompt further investigation to identify underlying conditions. For example, malaise commonly precedes infections such as influenza, indicating systemic inflammatory response.
