Myocardial infarction is the irreversible necrosis of heart muscle caused by prolonged ischaemia due to obstruction of a coronary artery. It is a critical diagnosis requiring prompt recognition and intervention to restore blood flow and limit cardiac damage. A common and serious complication is heart failure resulting from impaired myocardial contractility.
