Cystic fibrosis is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, leading to defective chloride ion transport and thick, viscous secretions in exocrine glands. Clinically, it causes chronic respiratory infections and pancreatic insufficiency, significantly impacting morbidity and mortality. A key complication is progressive bronchiectasis from recurrent lung infections.
