Coma

Coma is a state of profound unresponsiveness in which a patient cannot be awakened, fails to respond to stimuli, and lacks voluntary movements. It is crucial in clinical practice as it indicates severe underlying neurological impairment, often requiring urgent assessment and intervention to identify and treat the cause, such as traumatic brain injury or metabolic disturbances. A key complication of coma is the risk of progression to persistent vegetative state or brain death.
