Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the skin, sclera, and mucous membranes caused by elevated bilirubin levels in the blood. It signals underlying liver dysfunction, hemolysis, or biliary obstruction, making it a critical clinical sign for diagnosing hepatobiliary and hematologic diseases. A key complication is kernicterus, a neurotoxic effect in newborns.
