Peripheral oedema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitial spaces of the lower limbs, often presenting as swelling of the ankles and feet. It is clinically significant as it may indicate underlying conditions such as heart failure, venous insufficiency, or renal impairment. One important association is congestive heart failure, where impaired cardiac function leads to fluid retention and peripheral oedema.
